Iron Edge has expanded its range of Dead Balls, adding 20, 25, and 35kg balls.

If you haven't yet been introduced to the Dead Ball, it's basically a rubber ball filled with iron sand.  The flexibility of the rubber outer combined with the iron sand means that the Dead Ball is readily deformed and doesn’t bounce easily – it’s like a cross between a medicine ball and a sandbag.

The dead weight makes them perfect for exercises such as slams (great for speed and power development), shouldering, loading up movements such as squats in a different way and making pretty much anything you can do with a medicine ball a lot harder.

Iron Edge's Dead Balls are made from the toughest of materials and are specifically designed to withstand the punishment of being slammed and thrown as hard as any human possibly can.

The extra heavy dead balls are a great introduction to strongman training with atlas stones, allowing technique and good neural patterns to be developed before worrying about serious loads.

As you can see from the videos below the atlas stone is an incredibly awkward object and is lifted off the ground with a rounded back - lifting with this flexed spine position requires a lot of experience and body awareness (check out the Diesel Crew's article on atlas stone lifting here).  Smart progressions in terms of both skill and load using the heavier Dead Balls is definitely the way to go before tackling potential disc-poppers...

Of course, you can also do anything with the extra heavy Dead Balls that you can do with the lighter ones provided you're strong enough - good luck getting the 35kg ball to bounce so you can catch it on a slam...

Even just using the extra heavy Dead Balls to load up a squat, lunge or walk around the gym will provide a lot of people with a challenge, and to increase the challenge hold the Dead Ball on your shoulder rather than in front of your body.
