Why Kettlebells?

Kettlebells hit that sweet spot in functional training where they’re awkward enough to translate to on-field strength (as opposed to fixed machines) but actual weight can still be thrown around. They’re also versatile enough to be used for developing all modalities of fitness – strength, cardio, power, mobility and so on – and can easily cater for lifters ranging from first-timers to competitive kettlebell lifters.

Types of Kettlebells View All

There are two main types of kettlebells: classic and pro grade. Classic kettlebells will increase in size as they increase in weight, thus the smaller kettlebells are tiny and more handle than anything whilst the heavier weights get larger. The changes in handle and bell size means some classic kettlebells will not feel as comfortable in the rack position, resting in awkward positions.

Pro Grade kettlebells remain constant in size regardless of their weight. Similar to the use of bumper plates over standard rubber weight plates, this allows for consistent technique to be employed regardless of the weight. These are the kettlebells used in competitive kettlebell lifting.

For serious trainers another notable difference is the classic kettlebells having a powder coated handle versus the Pro Grades having a steel handle, which is better suited for chalking.

All Iron Edge Kettlebells are Pro Grade models.

Available Weights Shop Now

In competition; depending on weight classes, gender and the federation; the weights of kettlebells will vary from 8kg up to 40kg. Strongman shows may also use kettlebells that are heavier; the reason being kettlebell competitions involve performing lifts for extended periods (typically 10 minutes at a time) as opposed to a handful of reps to display maximum strength.

Less experienced lifters may benefit from using lighter kettlebells and smaller weight increments, so we make sure to stock additional weights that may not be used in competition.
