Buyers Guide - Racks
Rest assured, if you are new to the world of lifting or you’re not sure exactly what you’re after, we have had this conversation many times over; you’re far from alone.
We pride ourselves on having all kinds of options available whether for commercial gyms, studios, clinics or souped-up home gyms. Of course, this means that there are all kinds of options available. If you don’t know what you’re looking for, it may be tough to find the option that best works for you.
We have 3 main types of racks available: Matrixes, Assault Racks and Iron Cages. Depending on your definition of a rack, as an economy option we also offer Squat Stands.
The Matrix is essentially the sum of various crossbeams and uprights, and is designed to be highly customisable, the hub of your gym. It can be wall mounted, attached with height extensions and monkey bars, stretched into multiple cells etc.
The Assault Rack is a half rack, designed to be a standalone unit that provides a solo lifter with just about everything they need. The Assault Rack can be fitted with Spotting Arms, Utility Pegs for storage and more. The broad footprint can be bolted down for additional stability but is not a requirement, making this an ideal fit for a home gym.
The Iron Cage is our premium option for 1-2 lifters at a time. The Iron Cage can be attached to 1-2 Platforms, comes with several Utility Pegs for storage as standard, and similar to the Assault Rack can be bolted down for additional stability but does not need to be.
And finally, we have Squat Stands. The height of the uprights can be adjusted to allow for bench pressing, as well as for squatting from various heights, and that’s about it. For those who just want to squat and bench and aren’t concerned about needing Spotting Arms, this is your cheapest option. Note that the Squat Stands are not designed to accommodate attachments.
All of our rack attachments are compatible with all Iron Edge racks (excluding the Iron Cage – Barbell Storage, which is only compatible with the Iron Cage). This includes:

When determining your best fit, some factors you may wish to take into account include:
For commercial gyms and medium-large studios we generally recommend Matrixes with multiple cells or Double Half Iron Cages. A Double Half Iron Cage can fit 2 lifters at once, and our Matrixes can be stretched on forever to your heart’s content.
If you’re designing this gym with 1 lifter in mind, there is zero point in multiple stations. Unless you are really keen on super setting, or avoiding changing set ups.
If you have less than 2.4m space, then you need an Assault Rack Short or Squat Stands. Our Assault Rack Short stands a height of 2.05m. Our Squat Stands reach a peak height of 1.6m.
Otherwise, our Matrixes reach 2.4m high or up to 3.5m high with extensions, Iron Cages 2.41m high and normal height Assault Racks stand 2.45m.
As touched on above, if you’re in need of space then wall mounting is a handy solution to minimising your footprint. However, if you’re renting or otherwise unable to mount anything to a wall, obviously you’re not going to be using our Wall Mounted Matrix.
Our Wall Mounted Matrix – Single Cell – Compact juts out a mere 605mm from the wall.
All of our Iron Cages come with enough Utility Pegs to store 8 x sets of plates vertically, and can have a separate Barbell Storage unit attached to hang your spare Barbells from.
Our Assault Rack comes with a varying amount of Utility Pegs that can be attached to the back of your rack, depending on which model you select. The Assault Rack Pro with Storage allows for your Plates to be stored on a frame at the back of the rack, keeping your Plates out of the way. Additional Utility Pegs can be ordered at any time for additional plate storage.
Our Matrixes do not come with Utility Pegs as standard (Compact Single Cell with Storage aside) but these can be added for plate storage – remember that the Matrix is meant to be customised.
And finally, the Squat Stands will require a separate storage option.
Our separate storage options include:
- Toaster Rack
- Wall Mounted Plate Storage
- Weight Tree
If you’re operating a small studio and need room for other pieces, or filling out a garage gym, as much as you want the biggest and best it’s just not going to work if you're struggling for room.
Wall Mounted Matrixes are a simple solution to minimising your rack’s footprint without compromising functionality; our compact versions especially. The Squat Stands are as small a set up as you can ask for, but keep in mind that you can’t include attachments like a Chin Up Bar or Utility Pegs for storage.
All of our racks fit the basic idea of “I want to squat, deadlift and bench”. If you have a creative streak and are picturing all kinds of exotic group workouts your clients are going to perform, a Matrix is your best fit. We have dozens of pre-set suggestions on our website; but remember that a Matrix is a sum of individual parts, so it can be customised to fit the vision you have in your head.
Our J-Hooks are Black as a default, but are also available in White, Yellow and Red. These options are available to all racks.
Another option to consider is using Spotting Arms or Slings. If you have an Iron Cage or a free standing Matrix, you can use either option. The Slings may help improve the lifespan of your equipment but are only compatible with a cage-set up. Spotting Arms may be used outside the rack, potentially doubling the number of lifters using the rack at once.
If you’re serious about your heavy lifting and will be dropping your weights, whether heavy Deadlifts or Olympic lifting, a Platform is a good idea to preserve the lifespan of your Barbell, Plates and floor. A Platform can be placed separate to the rack of course, but this will create a lip to step over. If you want to perform front squats, or otherwise unrack a bar from shoulder height, this involves you stepping over the lip to get into lifting position, whilst holding a barbell that probably weighs more than you do. Not ideal.
If you want a Platform included with your rack, get the Iron Cage. This will connect directly to the Cage, and an insert will be included inside the rack to keep the floor flush with the Platform.
“I’m on a budget”
If you’re really stretched, our Squat Stands are the cheapest option that will allow you to squat and bench. Next up would be either our base model Assault Rack or a variation of our Single Cell Wall Mounted Matrix, which you can add attachments to down the line should you choose to upgrade your rack later.
“I’m on a lease / renting”
Our Assault Racks and Iron Cages have broad footprints, and will not require bolting down to the wall or floor.
“I’m looking at your Matrixes, and they’re close but I want to do something else”
Want a Matrix 10 cells long? Full of height extensions? Monkey bars halfway? You got it. The Matrixes displayed are pre-set suggestions that would fit most people’s needs. If you’ve got something else in mind, let us know and we can build it for you.
“I want the best rack you got”
Get an Iron Cage with a Platform or two. Load up on accessories.
“I don’t have much space”
If you can mount your rack to the wall, our Single Cell Wall Mounted Matrix – Compact measures 605mm from the wall and 1210mm across. Include some storage options between the frame and the wall, either using Utility Pegs or separate options like the Wall Mounted Plate Storage unit or Toaster Rack, and if you have a small set up that will fit all the needs of a general lifter.
If wall mounting is an issue, the footprint of our Assault Rack measures 1680mm deep x 1220mm across. Our Assault Rack – Short stands 2050mm high for those with a low room.
And finally, if you’re struggling for space our Squat Stands are 706mm deep x 606mm across.
