Product Description

A quality weightlifting belt is an essential part of any serious lifter’s kit

Firstly, a belt protects the lower back while you’re engaged in the lift. By increasing intra-abdominal pressure and compressing the contents of the abdominal cavity, the belt provides greater support to the whole mid-section, especially the bones and discs of the lower back.

The other benefit of wearing a belt is that it forms a rigid girdle around the lower torso, effectively connecting the rib cage to the hips. This prevents hyperextension during overhead lifts as well as preventing bending and twisting while the back is under stress.

The belt is intended to support your lower back, so it should be worn just above the hips with the fastener over your lower abdominals. It should sit as low as possible without becoming jammed into the crease of the hips during squats or deadlifts. As your belly will expand against the belt during the lift, you’ll want to tighten it one notch before the maximum.

The ‘valsalva manoeuvre’

To get the most out of your belt, you must employ the ‘valsalva manoeuvre’. This requires taking a deep breath of air into your belly and then trying to exhale forcefully with a closed glottis (throat). The pressure will push your belly against thebelt, thereby increasing the pressure around your midsection, as well as setting the lower back into an arch. It is essential to use the valsalvamanoeuvre to achieve the pressure, not simply tighten the belt as much as possible.

Iron Edge has produced a range of belts to address the needs of the full spectrum of lifters. All our belts are crafted from high-quality nylon to provide the stiffest, most rigorous support. It also ensures decades of durable, reliable service.
